CADCA’s members-only series, 12 Sectors | 12 Months | 12 Minutes, focuses on strategies for recruiting and engaging members of the 12 community sectors. CADCA interviewed 12 community sector leaders, who discussed strategies for recruiting and engaging their sector during a 12-minute video interview. They fielded questions from members from across the country, and key takeaways from the interviews and Q&A sessions have been compiled into easily digestible tip sheets. Civic-Volunteer Sector

Candice Mathew Healy, Partner at Working World LLC, spoke on recruiting and engaging the volunteer sector in coalition work. Candice has nearly 25 years of experience working in the non-profit sector and on government contracts. For much of her career, she has specialized in directing logistics and convening diverse groups.  Candice is also an avid volunteer serving on numerous boards and committees. She has represented the volunteer sector for CLOSE Community Coalition of Longmeadow for five years.

Substance Misuse Organization Sector
Lesley Gabel, Co-CEO of Prevention Resources, Inc, spoke on recruiting and engaging the substance misuse organization sector. Lesley has over 30 years of experience as a Certified Prevention Specialist and has won numerous awards, including Business Woman of the Year. Lesley is most proud of winning several CADCA awards, such as the prestigious CADCA Coalition of the Year award.

School Sector
Casey Fisher, the Community Partnership Manager Director at Cincinnati Public Schools (CPS), spoke on recruiting and engaging the school sector in coalition work. Casey has the pleasure of working with 66 Community Learning Centers across the district to ensure meaningful partner connections to provide resources, programs and services to 35,000+ students, their families and the community members where their buildings are located. She has a heart for service and is dedicated to maximizing impact with students, families and the community through CPS. She works closely as a school sector representative of the Cincinnati for H.O.P.E. Coalition to connect schools and families to vital information and programming that promotes an environment of healthy outcomes through prevention efforts. Casey looks forward to continuing creating connections and impact through the work of the coalition.

Youth-Serving Organization Sector
Erin Mabery, the Executive Director at Yavapai Big Brothers Big Sisters, discussed recruiting and engaging the youth-serving organization sector in coalition work. At Yavapai Big Brothers Big Sisters, Erin works to inspire and ignite the promise of youth through mentoring. Erin has served children and families for over 20 years, and is grateful for her years of work with families throughout Northern Arizona. She serves or has served on the Boards of Directors for Matforce-Yavapai’s substance abuse coalition, the Cottonwood Chamber of Commerce (Past Chair), and Milestones Project, which identifies young people who are extremely high risk for violence either in schools, their homes or within the community.

Healthcare Sector
Marissa Dopp and Britney Ward discussed how to recruit and engage the healthcare sector in coalition work. Marissa and Britney bring unique insight into how a local health department can collaborate with a hospital system to engage with multiple hospital departments, from the hospital’s pharmacy and physicians to the marketing department. Together, they reflected back 15 years ago to when they worked to create a smoke free hospital campus to today’s current challenges, which include the opioid epidemic.

Local/State Government Sector
Local government sector leader and CADCA Board Member, Greg Puckett, discussed how to recruit and retain local/state sector leaders in coalition work.

Greg Puckett is on the “front line” of local government as County Commissioner of Mercy County, WV. Among other responsibilities in this position, Greg appoints members to various local boards, authorities and public service districts, supports community services and lobbies for more state funding of local programs.

Parent Sector
Parent sector leader LaTasha Murray discussed how to recruit and retain parent sector leaders in coalition work.

Mrs. Murray has worked as the Substance Abuse Prevention and Marketing Director for Robeson Health Care Corporation in Lumberton, NC, for the past 15 years. She has spent over 20 years working to address health issues that have negatively impacted her local community. Through her professional position and personal devotion, she serves on several community coalitions and collaboratives. LaTasha has a strong passion for working with youth and has done so in several capacities, including RHCC Youth LEAD, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority youth affiliate groups and her faith organization. She has attended the DEA 360 program in Tampa, Florida, where her daughter, a CADCA youth trainer, was a guest facilitator.

Vinayak Menon is the Youth Sector Leader for the Forsyth County Drug Awareness Council and a rising junior at Lambert High School in Georgia. He has been actively involved with the coalition for the past two years and represented his district at multiple CADCA national trainings. He is also a community contributor for the Atlanta-Journal Constitution and has advocated for substance prevention on behalf of youth. Outside of prevention work, Vinayak is an officer in his school’s speech and debate team and Future Business Leaders of America Club.
