Research Into Action Webinar: Emerging Trends in Adolescent Suicide Prevention Research

Wednesday, September 9, 2020 – CADCA presented the latest installment of its Research Into Action webinar series on Wednesday, September 9, 2020 at 2 pm EST featuring Dr. Cheryl King discussing her recent article, “Emerging Trends in Adolescent Suicide Prevention Research”, which was published in Current Opinion in Psychology in 2018. Dr. King discussed her and her colleagues’ article’s findings regarding best practices in adolescent suicide prevention. The article highlights research regarding two strategies: creating protective environments and identifying and supporting youth at risk for suicide. Dr. King also discussed these two strategies and how coalitions can prevent suicide among youth in their communities.

  • American Foundation for Suicide Prevention – This organization also provides a wide variety of resources and has local chapters
  • The Columbia Lighthouse Project – This screening tool can be used to by anyone and the organization offers training in its use
  • CALM: Counseling on Access to Lethal Means – This free course trains mental health professionals or others working with at-risk populations to conduct lethal means counseling 
  • Family Check-up – In her presentation, Dr. King mentioned this intervention for families of adolescents at risk of substance use or other behavior problems
  • American Association of Suicidology – The American Association of Suicidology provides facts and statistics including a map showing rates by state
