Alexandria, VA (April 10, 2025) – Take Back Your 10 (TB10), a statewide youth-led movement dedicated to tobacco prevention and control in Maryland, is proud to announce the awarding of mini grants to four coalitions, designating them as local TB10 chapters. Sponsored by the Maryland Department of Health’s Center for Tobacco Prevention and Control and led by CADCA, TB10 promotes youth voices through education and awareness of how the tobacco industry markets in their own neighborhoods. This initiative marks a significant milestone in TB10’s mission to localize its impact and build youth engagement.
The organizations receiving funding and recognition as local TB10 chapters are:
- Youth Empowerment Source, Inc. (Cecil County)
- Building Mosaic Solutions, Inc./Berlin Prevention Works Coalition (Worcester County)
- Charting Careers (Anne Arundel County)
- Drug-Free Baltimore Coalition (Baltimore City)
These organizations, which already have strong foundations in community outreach, will now integrate TB10 activities into their programming. Each chapter will implement at least two activities from the TB10 Activity Guide to educate young people on the impact of the tobacco retail environment including tobacco product placement, advertisements, coupons/discounts, and proximity and density of tobacco retailers in their communities.
Local chapters will also conduct outreach and recruitment events to spread awareness about TB10 throughout their county. This year TB10 youth conducted tobacco retail environmental scans in Baltimore assessing the availability of tobacco products and advertisements used by the tobacco industry. This data will be used to inform discussions at the TB10 Youth Summit at the University of Maryland, Park Samuel Riggs IV Alumni Center in College Park, on Saturday, June 14. Local chapters will operate through June 2025, with CADCA providing ongoing training and support to help them lead effective prevention efforts. Organizations interested in becoming a TB10 local chapter can contact Leslie Ortiz-Cadwallader, MPH, at lortiz@cadca.org.
