Strategizers – a series of publications that offer concise, proven solutions to issues facing coalitions. Designed to provide step-by-step guidance, Strategizers range in topics from how to start a coalition, advocacy, getting the faith community involved, youth programs, conducting evaluations to reducing underage drinking, prescription drug abuse prevention, the myths of marijuana, effective prevention strategies, and community mobilization.

  • Strategizer 31 - Guidelines for Advocacy: Changing Policies and Laws to Create Safer Environments for Youth

    This Strategizer helps clarify what constitutes “lobbying” activities for nonprofit organizations and to what extent these organizations can participate in lobbying activities in particular and the legislative process in general.

  • Strategizer 56 - Creating Healthy, Tobacco-Free Environments

    Strategizer 56: Creating Healthy, Tobacco-Free Environments highlights recommendations by the Task Force on Community Preventive Services (TFCPS) to reduce tobacco use and secondhand smoke exposure.Using data analysis and conclusions from various sources, Strategizer 56 provides strategies coalitions can implement at the local level to prevent and reduce tobacco use. Also included in the publication are a host of helpful tobacco-related resources and case studies featuring CADCA coalitions’ local tobacco control and prevention work. The publication was developed by CADCA staff and supported by a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The Smoking Cessation Leadership Center (SCLC) at the University of California, San Francisco provided editing support.

  • Strategizer 55 - Regulating Alcohol Outlet Density: An Action Guide

    Strategizer 55, Regulating Alcohol Outlet Density: An Action Guide, outlines available evidence-based community prevention strategies shown to decrease the consequences associated with alcohol outlet density, the concentration of bars, restaurants serving alcohol, liquor and package stores in a given geographic area. The publication was developed by CADCA in partnership with the Center on Alcohol Marketing and Youth (CAMY) at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

  • Strategizer 54 - A Community’s Call to Action: Underage Drinking and Impaired Driving

    Strategizer 54, A Community’s Call to Action: Underage Drinking and Impaired Driving, is meant to help prevention practitioners create multi-layered prevention and inter­vention strategies to curb underage drinking among teens, and to prevent impaired driving among young adults ages 21-24. Developed in partnership with Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Strategizer 54 provides the latest facts, strategies and resources that coalitions and MADD Affiliates can use to address these issues in their communities.

  • Strategizer 53 - Preventing Methamphetamine Use in Your Community

    Developed in collaboration with the Office of National Drug Control Strategy, Strategizer 53: Preventing Methamphetamine Use In Your Community offers strategies that coalitions can use to prevent meth use and to spread the word that meth treatment works. The publication contains the tools necessary to create a localized community action and media campaign and highlights best practices in meth abuse prevention.

  • Strategizer 52 - Teen Prescription Drug Abuse: An Emerging Threat

    Developed in collaboration with the ONDCP’s National Youth Anti-Drug Media Campaign, Strategizer 52, Teen Prescription Drug Abuse: An Emerging Threat, provides the latest facts on prescription drug abuse or misuse among youth, strategies that prevention practitioners can use to address this issue in their communities, and best practices from coalitions across the country.

  • Strategizer 51 - The Weed and Seed Toolbox (Online Only)

    The Weed and Seed Toolbox, Strategizer 51, was developed by CADCA in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Justice’s Community Capacity Development Office (CCDO). This in-depth manual provides coalitions and Weed and Seed Communities with the tools to craft better and more sustainable prevention and intervention strategies to improve conditions in neighborhoods or communities, making them better, healthier, and safer places to live and work.

  • Strategizer 50 - Coalitions and Drug Testing: At-Home, In-School, At-Work

    With the support of Phamatech, Inc., this new Strategizer helps coalitions gain a better understanding of how drug testing fits into the prevention/intervention picture, featuring examples of testing in action and steps that coalitions can take to integrate drug testing into their community prevention strategy.

  • Strategizer 49 - Community Briefings: A Prevention Tool for Communities

    Provides step-by-step information about organizing an effective community briefing—from the planning process to tips on how to promote and generate news coverage from your briefing. Also includes guidelines on how to best use the information from the briefing and examples of coalitions that used a community briefing to build community awareness.

  • Strategizer 48 - Guiding Principles for Coalition Evaluation

    Provides a general framework for designing an evaluation specific to coalitions and offers guiding principles to help coalitions plan an evaluation.
