Youth Lead the Way at Mental Health Advocacy Day

On March 13, more than 200 Youth Leaders in Kansas (YLINK) members and sponsors came together to champion mental health awareness and youth advocacy in the state of Kansas. Their efforts emphasized the power of youth voices in reducing stigma around mental health. Organized by the Kansas Department of Aging and Disability Services, Youth Mental Health Advocacy Day provided a platform for young advocates to raise awareness about mental health issues, promote resources for youth wellbeing, and ultimately drive change in their communities.

This year, Upstream Kansas worked alongside youth from the Kansas Youth Prevention Action Council (KYPAC) to help amplify their voices and highlight the connection between mental health and substance use prevention. KYPAC member Breeson North was interviewed by WIBW about his experience at the Kansas Statehouse and what inspired him to join YLINK. At the Mental Health Rally, KYPAC member Ellie Foos delivered an inspiring message to youth across Kansas.

KYPAC is composed of youth leaders from across the state who are committed to substance use prevention and mental health promotion. The Council is responsible for advising YLINK and Upstream Kansas, developing youth campaigns and toolboxes, and planning events for other youth leaders.

YLINK offers young people aged 12 through 18 the opportunity to build leadership skills and engage in community action. Through YLINK, youth develop strategies to address the stigma around mental health and suicide prevention. The program also helps participants improve family and peer relationships, engage in civic activities, and gain valuable skills for future careers and educational opportunities. A main highlight is the opportunity to participate in the state legislative process, ensuring youth perspectives are heard at every level of policymaking.
