CADCA STATEMENT ON NOMINATION OF MICHAEL BOTTICELLI AS U.S. DRUG CZAR

Washington, DC – Today, Gen. Arthur T. Dean, Chairman and CEO of Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA), the nation’s leading substance abuse prevention organization, issued the following statement in response to President Obama’s intent to nominate Michael Botticelli as the Director of National Drug Control Policy.

“CADCA strongly supports President Obama’s decision to nominate Michael Botticelli as our nation’s drug czar. Mr. Botticelli is the ideal person to hold this important position at this time in our nation. Not only does he understand first-hand the challenges associated with substance abuse, treatment and recovery, he has a keen understanding of the science of prevention and values the important role community coalitions play in preventing and reducing teen drug use.

“CADCA has been fortunate to work with Mr. Botticelli as Acting Director of National Drug Control Policy. He recently participated in our Mid-Year Training Institute where he addressed nearly 2,000 community prevention leaders from across the country. He also spoke to hundreds of young people and was actively engaged in CADCA’s National Youth Leadership Initiative.

“He brings not only a wealth of experience to the role, but also a clear vision for the future direction of national drug control policy, emphasizing a stronger focus on prevention, intervention, treatment and recovery.

“Mr. Botticelli is a true leader with a strong ability to bring key leaders and organizations together to address our nation’s drug use epidemic. CADCA hopes his nomination is approved swiftly and we will work with leaders in Congress to provide any necessary support throughout the approval process.”
