Today, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Office on Smoking and Health released a tobacco-related article in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine entitled, “Tobacco Use, Secondhand Smoke, and Smoke-Free Home Rules in Multi-Unit Housing.”
In this study, authors found that Americans living in multiunit housing (MUH), such as apartments and condominiums, are more likely to use tobacco products and less likely to have smoke-free home rules than people living in single-family housing. Specifically, a quarter of all adult MUH residents use tobacco products and a third of all MUH residents with smoke-free rules are exposed to secondhand smoke that comes into their units from nearby areas.
Continued efforts to promote tobacco cessation and smoke-free building policies can protect all MUH residents, employees and visitors from the dangers of tobacco use and secondhand smoke exposure.
