CADCA’s Mid-Year Training Institute offers Sessions on Cultural Competence

Coalition leaders can get the basics and also learn how to be a more culturally competent and inclusive coalition at CADCA’s 15th annual Mid-Year Training Institute at The Mirage Hotel in Las Vegas July 17th-21.

CADCA National Coalition Academy trainer, Dorothy Chaney M.Ed., and President of the Community Health Alliance in Wisconsin, will be facilitating three training sessions at the Mid-Year: “Building Coalitions for Success,” “Coalition 101” and “Creating Culturally Inclusive Coalitions.”

The session that focuses upon cultural competence is an introductory session to cultural competence that will provide participants an opportunity to explore the concept of culture and understand that cultural competence both at the individual and coalition level is an active and ongoing process. The session is designed for those new to prevention or coalition work, Chaney said.

She describes “Coalitions 101” as a perfect training session for new coalition members and prevention professionals who are interested in learning the basic, fundamental concepts related to substance abuse prevention and the role of coalitions in community problem solving.

“Building Coalitions for Success” will provide participants with ideas resources and tools to help them build strong, functioning coalitions that are poised to become strong agents of change in the community. This session will also provide time for participants to identify challenges they are having in their coalitions and provide opportunities for problem solving. Key topics covered will include: Finding ways to utilize coalition member skills and talents as a strategy to keep members active and engaged; how to develop levels of involvement; using social media to build a community brand; tips for engaging underserved populations; and how to leverage both fiscal and non-fiscal resources.
