CADCA-TV will feature an hour-long program about underage drinking. The show will debut Sept. 10th and be available on demand.
Watch “The Sobering Consequences of Underage Drinking,” to learn about the latest trends in underage drinking including the science behind the statistics, some of the serious consequences that come from underage and binge drinking, and what coalition members can do about it.
The program features Sean C. Briscoe, Patrol Sergeant, Sturgis, S.D. Police Department; Bob Brewer, MD, MSPH, Epidemiologist, Lead, Alcohol Program, Division of Adult and Community Health, National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; and Kara Graveman, Executive Director, Action for the Betterment of the Community (ABC) in Sturgis, S.D. Mary Elizabeth Elliott, CADCA’s Vice-President of Communications, Membership and IT, serves at the program’s host.
The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, held annually, is one of the largest in the world. It brings significant income to the citizens of Sturgis, a town of only 6,627 people, but with that is the cost all the debauchery brings to the community. Graveman discusses the impact of the annual rally in her community on this CADCA TV episode and told CADCA, “In a town of only 6,500 people, it’s hard to imagine that businesses promote selling over 1 million cans of beer in a week.”
Graveman continued, “There is always a debate about environment versus genetics. Where we live in Sturgis, S.D., where the rates of 30-day use of alcohol in teens is higher than the state and national level, you begin to believe that the environment plays a larger role than we think.”
