Learn New Strategies to Extinguish Tobacco at CADCA’s National Leadership Forum

As more and more people kick the habit of smoking, coalitions can still be stumped on how to prevent youth from lighting up. The immergence of alternative smoking products such as electronic cigarettes and flavored cigarillos are heavily marketed to youth and cause confusion. Make a Impacto monumental with tobacco and other substance abuse prevention at CADCA’s 26th National Leadership Forum Feb. 1-4 and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s 12elJornada Anual de Prevención.

CADCA’s Forum will offer several tobacco-related training sessions. You’ll hear about some case studies from a coalition in Palo Alto, Calif., about electronic cigarettes from The South Kingstown Partnership for Prevention in Rhode Island, and how to work with retailers on prevention efforts.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention – Office on Smoking and Health will present a handful of training sessions. One, “How Mass Media Campaigns Can Target Diverse Groups of Smokers,” will feature presenters Yvonne Hunt, Ph.D., MPH – Program Director National Cancer Institute and Crystal Bruce, BS., MPH – Health communications Specialist. Hunt will provide an overview of tobacco use among people with behavioral health comorbidities, with an emphasis on tobacco-related health disparities and unmet cessation needs in this population. Bruce will provide an overview of the Tips From Former Smokers; specifically focusing on the behavioral health population and how attendees can find and use the wide array of resources.

Keith A. Vensey (Bussey), MBA, MPH, CADCA’s Program Manager, Tobacco and Cancer, said, “The tobacco related sessions provide an opportunity for attendees to learn about evidence based practices and promising strategies related to addressing tobacco use on the national, state and local levels.  They provide an opportunity to network with other public health professionals, clinicians, community-based substance abuse prevention professionals, coalition leaders, prevention and addiction researchers among others who may be interested in tobacco control efforts.”
