NATHANIEL J. SUTTON ADVOCACY IN THE ARTS AWARD
The Mark & Brenda Moore and Family Foundation was started as a way to make a difference in the lives of others; its credo is: Establishing roots and stretching wings. Many of the causes that are dear to their hearts are built into four pillars: health care, education, Christian evangelism, and the arts.
The Moores are donors to Inova Health System, and helped build the Mark and Brenda Moore Patient Tower at the Inova Mount Vernon Hospital in Alexandria, Virginia -- where Mark was treated for his strokes in 2007. The tower opened in December 2014, with all private rooms and state-of-the-art facilities for rehabilitation and joint replacement. In addition to being the lead donors on that project, they also sponsored two galas that raised $4 million, and held seats on the healthcare system's Foundation Board and the Patient Experience Advisory Committee. Mark is still an active member of INOVA Health System’s Board of Directors.
They are founding donors of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture, as well as supporters of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre. Additionally, they have supported the Posse Foundation, which awards four-year, full-tuition scholarships to under-represented high school scholars. As devoted patrons, Mark and Brenda have also been members of the Advisory Board of Alexandria-based Hopkins House Early Childhood Learning Center.
Mark and Brenda believe that tradition, legacy, and service matter; each are uniquely called to be philanthropists, to improve our world.
