Coalitions Leaders Globally are Gearing up to Attend CADCA’s 2018 Mid-Year Training Institute in Orlando, Florida

The upcoming CADCA Mid-Year Training Institute is set to be the biggest yet with over 2,000 registered participants on their way to the city of Orlando, Florida during the week of July 15th – 19th. Of those attending, 75 individuals are arriving from 21 different countries spanning Latin America, Africa, Central Asia and Southeast Asia.

These participants are part of a global community coalition network trained by CADCA and comprised of national and local coordinators, volunteer coalition members and government officials working closely in-country to support their prevention work. Among those in attendance are local and national authorities including mayors, representatives from national drug control agencies and U.S. Embassy representatives.

For the first time, representatives from the República Dominicana, Equador e maurício will be in attendance and have the opportunity to network with more seasoned coalition representatives from countries such as Brasil, México, Peru, Tadjiquistão, the Filipinas e mais.

These delegations will also have the opportunity to present their work on applying the community coalition model within their country contexts and attend various training sessions. The Mexican, Peruvian e Puerto Rican teams will offer Spanish-language sessions on community assessment, sustainability and documenting coalition impact.

National Association of Attorneys General Letter to Congress

On Oct. 24, the National Association of Attorneys General released a letter to the House and Senate Appropriations Committees urging for the closure of the hemp loophole, created by a provision in the 2018 Farm Bill that has resulted in the proliferation of hemp-derived THC and other intoxicating products throughout the country. The letter, signed by 39 state and territorial attorneys general, advocates for closing the hemp loophole “to leave no doubt that these products are illegal and that their sale and manufacture are criminal acts.”

What does it really mean for your coalition to be ready to implement a new strategy, program, or policy? In mid-October, CADCA hosted the sixth webinar in its 18-part series, Competencies in Focus. Each webinar explores one of CADCA’s Coalition Competencies, a research-backed framework designed to strengthen coalition work. Developed in partnership with the Center for Public Health Systems Science at Washington University in St. Louis, these competencies are the result of more than three years of research and input from coalition leaders.
