Wednesday, June 20, 2018 – Dr. Ana Rule discussed her article entitled “Metal Concentrations in e-Cigarette Liquid and Aerosol Samples: The Contribution of Metallic Coils”, published in February 2018 in Environmental Health Perspectives. Dr. Rule’s article presents her and her colleagues’ findings regarding e-cigarettes as a source of exposure to toxic metals when the heating coil comes into contact with the e-liquid in the e-cigarette tank. The researchers found higher concentrations of toxic metals in samples of aerosol and e-liquid in the tank than in a sample from the refilling dispenser, indicating that contact with the metal coil induced e-liquid contamination. Dr. Rule also discussed the implications of this research for future FDA regulation of e-cigarettes.
