CADCA’s History
At the core of CADCA’s creation is the belief in the effectiveness and efficiency of local coalitions as catalysts for drug-free communities globally, combating substance misuse through the implementation of comprehensive strategies for Community Change. In response to the growing rise of crack cocaine usage in the United States, President George H.W. Bush creates the President’s Drug Advisory Council (PDAC) to recommend and advise on national drug control policies
PDAC recommends the formation of a national nonprofit to help coordinate substance use prevention partnerships. Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA) was formed.
CADCA lobbied for the Drug Free Communities (DFC) Act, which was signed into law by President Bill Clinton in 1997, creating the nation’s leading effort to mobilize communities to prevent youth substance use.
CADCA is selected as part of the DFC Act reauthorization to create and manage the National Coalition Institute to support the development of community anti-drug coalitions.
Tasked by the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement, CADCA adapts the coalition model for international locations, marking its global footprint.
CADCA launches the Geographic Health Alliance, a CDC funded National Network, dedicated to reducing geographic health disparities related to tobacco and cancer.
CADCA expands into the field of problem gambling by facilitating a bootcamp training for the Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction, Problem Gambling Services.
Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America officially changes its name to CADCA to better reflect the scope of work and the application of the proven model for community change to additional areas of public health.
