What You Need To Know About Kratom

Tuesday, July 16th
8:30 AM - 12:00 PM
Room:
Grapevine C
Description:

Kratom, a controversial herbal supplement that can come in natural or synthetic form and is ingested as tea or capsule form. Users of kratom say that this is a natural way to combat opioid withdrawal, but both the Food and Drug Administration and the Drug Enforcement Agency disagree. With calls to poison controls centers on the rise and a number of kratom related overdose deaths on record, kratom is a dangerous substance that is widely available in vape shops, convenience stores, kratom cafes and online. Six states and several cities in the US have regulated kratom, but it is still widely used in many parts of the country. This session will explore the history of kratom, its rise to popularity in the US, where it stands in being considered a schedule I substance and how coalitions can inform themselves and their communities about this dangerous, emerging trend.

At the end of the training session, the participants will be able to:

1. Learn the history and use of kratom
2. Understand how kratom is used and its impact on the body
3. Explore how Kratom has become so popular in many parts of the country
4. Discuss how to assess this emerging trend as a part of your coalition’s work
