The Stigma About Stigma
Let’s face it, the substance use disorder (SUD) field has many complexities and often prevention, treatment and recovery by design work in silos, not fully engaging with one another. This often leads to a lack of understanding and isolation for each specialty, yet we all have the same target of healthier communities that reduce triggers for youth and our recovering individuals. This workshop will highlight the need for the SUD field to breakdown their silos and work comprehensively for positive population level health outcomes. As the Recovery movement strengthens across our country, it is essential we have them with us at the table. In order to effectively do that it is essential we look at our own communications and how we continue to feed the stigma and ensure our language helps breaks down barriers, welcoming the recovery community. Let’s work together and make the case for the Recovery Community to be the 13th sector.
At the end of the training session, participants will be able to learn how to use the Strategic Prevention Framework to support Recovery Outcome, identify language that is stigmatizing to individuals with Substance Use Disorder, and develop a strategy for conduct a language audit and engage the recovery community.
