{"id":17369,"date":"2017-07-11T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2017-07-11T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cadca1stg.wpengine.com\/resource\/coalitions-in-action-matforce-encourages-community-to-stand-and-be-drug-free\/"},"modified":"2017-07-11T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2017-07-11T00:00:00","slug":"coalitions-in-action-matforce-encourages-community-to-stand-and-be-drug-free","status":"publish","type":"resource","link":"https:\/\/www.cadca.org\/pt\/resource\/coalitions-in-action-matforce-encourages-community-to-stand-and-be-drug-free\/","title":{"rendered":"Coalitions in Action:\u00a0MATFORCE Encourages Community to Stand and Be Drug Free"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rtecenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cadca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/mecoalitionspotlight71117.jpg\" style=\"height:323px; width:576px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In Yavapai County, Arizona, MATFORCE coalition implemented the Stand with Me, Be Drug Free\u00ae campaign, engaging 50,000 community members.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe campaign was developed to celebrate the fact that a majority of people do not abuse drugs and alcohol,\u201d said Merilee Fowler, Executive Director at MATFORCE. \u201cThe campaign included town, city and county governments reading a \u2018Stand with Me, Be Drug Free\u2019 proclamation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition, \u201cStand with Me, Be Drug Free\u201d posters were displayed in hundreds of windows and banners hung across main streets. Three \u201cWalk with Me, Be Drug Free\u201d events were held. Television and radio commercials were produced, promoting the \u201cdrug free\u201d message and social media messaging reached over 30,000 impressions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMATFORCE started in 2006 to address the methamphetamine problem in our county,\u201d said Fowler. \u201cIn 2007, we expanded our focus to address all legal and illegal substances that are being abused. Currently, MATFORCE has 15 committees with 289 active community members.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>MATFORCE provides substance abuse education for kindergarten through 12<sup>\u00ba<\/sup> grade students to any school in Yavapai County, free of charge. This past school year, MATFORCE implemented research-based substance abuse curriculums to 11,884 students in classroom settings. The coalition introduced nine different curriculums, including:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Botvin Life Skills\u00ae<\/li>\n<li>Keep a Clear Mind\u00ae<\/li>\n<li>Not Prescribed\u00ae<\/li>\n<li>Stand with Me, Be Drug Free\u00ae<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Yavapai County is located in central Arizona, a large county with 8,000 square miles. A mainly rural county, it has a population of 215,000, nine incorporated communities and over 20 unincorporated communities. Within the county, there are two Indian tribes: Yavapai Apache Nation and the Prescott Yavapai Indian Tribe. The coalition has helped facilitate significant reductions in youth use of alcohol and prescription drugs. According to the Arizona Youth Survey, youth use of alcohol has decreased over 40 percent and youth use of prescription drugs has reduced over 50 percent in the last eight years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo be successful in coalition work, you need to give people a purpose and be productive with their time,\u201d Fowler advises other coalitions. \u201cPeople don\u2019t want to meet to meet, they want to meet to determine strategies and to implement those strategies.
