Promising Practices and Emerging Trends for Preventing Youth Substance Use: Highlights of findings from the 2018 Drug-Free Communities (DFC) National Evaluation

Tuesday, July 16th
1:30 PM - 5:00 PM
Room:
Texas D
Description:

Community coalitions across the US and its territories have received Drug-Free Communities (DFC) Support Program grant awards. These DFC coalitions lead the way in addressing community substance use, as can be highlighted in key findings from the 2018 Drug-Free Communities National Evaluation. These findings revealed several promising and innovative practices in which successful DFC coalitions are engaging. A key aspect to addressing youth substance use is to build community capacity by putting into place people and systems to help address youth substance use issues as they occur locally and as they emerge over time. The presentation will highlight findings on DFC's work to build capacity and prevent youth substance use. These practices include hosting youth coalitions, working closely with the Law Enforcement sector, and implementing strategies and activities around opioid prevention, among others. This presentation will describe the promising and innovative practices undertaken by DFC coalitions, as well as provide information on how these practices relate to the success of the coalitions.

At the end of the training session, the participants will be able to:

1. Understand key findings from the DFC National Evaluation regarding core outcomes, membership, and strategies, and those associated with innovating and promising practices being undertaken by successful DFC coalitions
2. Understand how DFC coalitions are building community capacity to address emerging issues such as opioids.
3. Understand promising practices in addressing youth substance use.
4. Understand why and how engaging in promising and innovative practices may contribute to better community coalition practice overall.
