The SC Department of Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Services (DAODAS) is looking to hire a Prevention Consultant that will:

•Provide coordination of the annual Synar Youth Access to Tobacco Study with the county alcohol and drug abuse authorities. Provides technical assistance and training to the county authorities on effective environmental prevention strategies (all substances) and evidence-based tobacco prevention programs, and conducts site visits to review compliance of the county authorities/grant recipients with DAODAS standards as outlined in contracts. Monitors data related to Synar, tobacco, and environmental prevention strategies.

 

• Synar Study/Tobacco Prevention – Manages coordination of the annual Youth Access to Tobacco Study, to include: training/technical assistance for county authorities assisting with the completion of the study; maintenance of the list of tobacco outlets in South Carolina; implementation of the study; completion of the annual report that is submitted to SAMHSA/CSAP by the end of the calendar year; and coordination of the coverage study that is required every three years. Other tasks related to tobacco prevention include managing the STEP incentive program, Counter Tools (point of sale) program, providing training and technical assistance to the county authorities/coalitions on evidence-based tobacco prevention strategies, managing the Tobacco Education Program, and attending federal trainings/meetings/webinars related to Synar/tobacco prevention as required by DAODAS.

 

•Environmental Prevention – Develops and manages training for best practices in environmental prevention strategies for prevention professionals and their partners (law enforcement, school personnel, community partners, etc.). Assists with coordination of the Alcohol Enforcement Team Coordinators' bi-monthly meetings. Provides staff support for the statewide Enforcing Underage Drinking Laws committee and collaborates with state agencies and coalitions working on substance use prevention throughout the state. Provides oversight of the Palmetto Retailers Education Program (PREP) and other initiatives related to merchant/server education. Represents DAODAS at partner meetings related to substance abuse prevention (as needed).

 

•Contract Compliance / Quality Assurance – Assists in the implementation of annual county prevention site visits as part of a DAODAS team to review county prevention programs for compliance with DAODAS standards as outlined in the DAODAS Funding and Compliance Contract, policies/procedures, and applicable contract requirements.

 

Minimum and Additional Requirements:

 

A Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher education and professional experience in human services or social service programs •Knowledge of the substance abuse prevention field.

•Ability to handle multiple tasks, be a self-starter, and maintain program priorities under pressure.

•Ability to exercise sound judgment and discretion.

•Strong word-processing skills and basic spreadsheet and PowerPoint skills.

•Knowledge of effective environmental strategies for the prevention for substance use disorders and the Strategic Prevention Framework planning model.

•Competence in public speaking and exceptional communication skills.

•Highly developed skills in leadership, workshop development, multimedia presentations, and oral and written communication.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

•Master's degree in Public Health Education or a prevention-related field from an accredited institution of higher learning and one year of relevant program experience OR a bachelor's degree and five years of relevant program experience.

•Note: These Preferred Qualifications are desirable, but not mandatory, for applicants to be considered for the position.
