Policy and Practice: The Power of Prevention to Address Opioid Misuse Among Young Athletes

Thursday, February 6, 2020
9:00 AM
10:15 AM

This workshop will assist attendees to recognize the risk of prescription opioid use and misuse in student athletes. We will also discuss strategies that coaches, athletic trainers, and athletic directors can use to keep young athletes safe. Two PowerPoint presentations – one for coaches and one for student athletes – will be provided to participants that they can use back in their coalition areas, in addition to a variety of handouts for coaches and an Athlete Consent Form for parents. This session will also look at policies that school districts can implement to minimize risks around prescribed opioids among student athletes.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this session, participants will be able to:

1) Describe the additional risks that student athletes have in misusing opioids based on data.

2) Use the provided presentation and materials to train athletic trainers, coaches, and athletic directors on the importance of monitoring students with an opioid prescription.

3) Advocate for a school district-wide policy that requires parents/guardians to sign a pre-season form that educates on the precautions to be taken if a student athlete is prescribed an opioid.
