The New Tobacco Landscape, Menthol, and What You Can Do!

Tuesday, 02/05/2019
1:45 PM
3:00 PM
Chesapeake 4-6

Description

The 21st Century has introduced a widely diverse array of new forms of smoking and smoking devices including e-cigarettes and vaping. The introduction of electronic cigarettes and the legalization of marijuana has radically altered the landscape of tobacco use prevention and control. Although cigarette smoking rates have continued to decline, there has not been the same decrease in the use of many other tobacco products. This includes menthol and other flavored tobacco products (including cigarillos and hookah) and e-cigarettes. Minorities, youth, and young adults are specifically being targeted with these products and using them in conjunction with marijuana. This session will look at the intersection of various smoking/vaping products, current action against menthol/flavored tobacco, and how local coalitions can get involved in prevention and education efforts. It will deal mainly with tobacco and e-cigarettes, and will include marijuana as dual usage which is extremely common.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this session, participants will be able to: Learn about the changing landscape of tobacco use (including the intersection of tobacco, e-cigs, marijuana), support the fight against menthol/flavored tobacco (specific to minority and youth usage) and identify how local coalitions can support local level tobacco control efforts.
