Uruguay

Trainings started in the capital city of Montevideo within the La Union Community in 2014. With the support of Maldonado state authorities, CADCA was able to expand into Maldonado Nuevo the following year and to three new communities in 2018 through the Training of Leaders initiative. The mayors from these participating communities entered into a formal cooperative agreement with CADCA to support and champion the community coalitions. The coalitions of San Carlos, Pan de Azucar and Cerro Pelado have benefited greatly from these partnerships and will undoubtedly be sustained beyond CADCA’s involvement as a result. The original coalitions launched in 2014 are still active, conducting activities to reduce the use of crack-cocaine in public spaces. In early 2019, La Union worked with the local government and local NGOs to restore a historical plaza used for drug consumption and sales.
