This session focused on the Leadership competency, which is needed to navigate change and\u00a0maintain\u00a0a shared vision over time.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The\u00a0webinar\u00a0featured insights from\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Zara Petkovic\u00a0of the Center for Public Health Systems Science (CPHSS) at the Washington University in St. Louis;\u00a0Julie Hook, community strategist with\u00a0PreventEd\u00a0and program director\u00a0of the\u00a0HOPE for Franklin County\u00a0Coalition; and Kristin\u00a0Bengston, the director\u00a0of\u00a0community\u00a0services at\u00a0PreventEd.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Petkovic opened the session by reviewing the background and purpose of the\u00a0coalition\u00a0competencies\u00a0and highlighting the knowledge, skills, and abilities associated with the leadership competency.\u00a0CADCA\u2019s\u00a0Coalition Competencies cover three areas:\u00a0operations, community, and prevention, and\u00a0provide\u00a0a\u00a0comprehensive view of\u00a0what is needed for\u00a0a coalition to be successful as a whole.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Leadership is defined as creating and communicating a shared vision for a changing future, including championing solutions to organizational and community\u00a0challenges\u00a0and building partnerships. The evidence consistently shows that strong leadership contributes to coalition capacity, effectiveness, and sustainability. HOPE is a Drug-Free Communities\u00a0(DFC)-funded coalition now in its eighth year, serving\u00a0all of Franklin County, Missouri.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;335551550&quot;:0,&quot;335551620&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Hook\u00a0has been involved with the coalition for 16 years, first as a community member raising her family in Franklin County, then through coalition support at\u00a0PreventEd, and eventually as the coalition\u2019s program director. Over that time,\u00a0she\u2019s\u00a0seen firsthand how leadership and the coalition itself\u00a0has\u00a0continually evolved.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;335551550&quot;:0,&quot;335551620&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In 2009, Franklin County faced a significant methamphetamine lab crisis, with labs\u00a0operating\u00a0in homes and deeply\u00a0impacting\u00a0families. In response, community leaders came together through a grassroots effort that led to the creation of a nonprofit organization, Foundations for Franklin County. Leadership at the time included law enforcement, a treatment court judge, a pediatric physician serving families involved with child services, and leaders from the children\u2019s division.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;335551550&quot;:0,&quot;335551620&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">That effort resulted in county-level policy requiring a prescription for pseudoephedrine, a key ingredient in \u201cshake-and-bake\u201d meth labs. While the\u00a0policy\u00a0success could have marked the end of the group\u2019s work, strong leadership and cohesion led the group to continue and expand\u00a0its focus to\u00a0related issues like\u00a0drug-endangered children and\u00a0prescription drug safety. Over time, the coalition pursued funding opportunities, applied twice for DFC funding, and\u00a0ultimately secured\u00a0federal support.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;335551550&quot;:0,&quot;335551620&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Hook\u00a0shared this history to illustrate how leadership develops over time and how coalitions can adapt rather than dissolve once\u00a0an initial\u00a0goal is met.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;335551550&quot;:0,&quot;335551620&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Kristin emphasized that coalition leadership is fundamentally different than leadership in more traditional organizational structures. Coalition leaders have the\u00a0difficult task\u00a0of navigating shared power, varied partners, and evolving community needs, often without direct authority. Even the most capable leader must continually assess community readiness and ensure strategies align with current needs.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">She shared an example from Franklin County, where a quarter-cent sales tax initiative passed to fund youth services. While HOPE\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0directly access those funds, the initiative strengthened the broader system by increasing resources for partner agencies. Whether\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0a\u00a0new coalition member, first-time leader, or a seasoned professional stepping into a new role, the same foundational process applies. Effective leaders must be able to access and understand relevant information, apply it through the lens of their community\u2019s needs, and\u00a0communicate\u00a0it clearly and accurately to coalition members, partners, and the broader public.\u00a0As community needs\u00a0shift, leaders must be responsive and adjust their approach based on what their coalition needs at any given time.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The presenters also walked through multiple coalition snapshots to show how leadership skills can develop at\u00a0different stages.
