Led by\u00a0Zara Petkovi\u0107 from Washington University in St. Louis\u2019 Center for Public Health Systems Science, Dr. Brett\u00a0Maricque\u00a0from the McDonnell Genome Institute at Washington University School of Medicine, and CADCA Trainer Kristina Clark, the session explored what it takes to build\u00a0meaningful\u00a0relationships that support long-term prevention success.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Community engagement is defined as developing relationships with different sectors, groups, or organizations to implement substance use prevention strategies. As Zara noted, the evidence is clear: strong community engagement boosts coalition participation and satisfaction; ensures\u00a0coalition efforts match community needs; promotes community ownership of coalition work; and increases coalition sustainability, capacity, and funding.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">She then walked attendees through the knowledge, skills, and abilities that form the backbone of\u00a0the competency. Coalitions need a strong understanding of community resources, demographics, norms, and local history, as well as the ability to gather perspectives, foster participation, and build\u00a0dynamic, flexible partnerships. One of the principles that he emphasized\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun ContextualSpellingAndGrammarErrorV2Themed SCXW218883678 BCX8\">est<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW218883678 BCX8\">\u00a0communities have autonomy and agency, and no external entity should assume decision-making power on their behalf. Building consensus, sharing ownership, and working at\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW218883678 BCX8\">&quot;<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW218883678 BCX8\">the speed of trust\u201d<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW218883678 BCX8\">\u00a0is crucial. These ideas center on creating an environment where people feel like they belong in the conversation, see themselves in the work, and share a common language with project partners. Belonging requires organizations or institutions to co-create with community members, valuing lived experiences as strengths that can significantly improve programs, research, and service delivery.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Human-centered design played a strong role in the conversation as well. Dr. Maricque shared that people-centered planning requires us to be sure that we\u2019re solving the right problems, something we can learn only by asking community members directly. Human-centered design also prompts coalitions to view systems holistically, recognizing that sometimes it\u2019s the system (not the individual) that needs to change. Because change doesn\u2019t always have to be large-scale, this approach encourages small, testable interventions that can be quickly piloted and refined with community input.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-23098 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cadca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/CIF-Community-Engagement.3png.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"936\" height=\"502\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cadca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/CIF-Community-Engagement.3png.png 936w, https:\/\/www.cadca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/CIF-Community-Engagement.3png-300x161.png 300w, https:\/\/www.cadca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/CIF-Community-Engagement.3png-768x412.png 768w, https:\/\/www.cadca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/CIF-Community-Engagement.3png-18x10.png 18w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 936px) 100vw, 936px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW64209039 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW64209039 BCX8\">To\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW64209039 BCX8\">demonstrate<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW64209039 BCX8\">\u00a0these principles in action, Dr.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed SCXW64209039 BCX8\">Maricque<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW64209039 BCX8\">\u00a0highlighted two projects:\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW64209039 BCX8\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span class=\"TextRun SCXW94871772 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW94871772 BCX8\">Our Community Our Health\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span class=\"TextRun SCXW94871772 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW94871772 BCX8\"><strong>brought<\/strong> COVID-19 and flu vaccines into St. Louis neighborhoods experiencing low vaccination rates. Through pop-up clinics, ongoing conversations, and real-time feedback, they <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW94871772 BCX8\">continuously<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW94871772 BCX8\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW94871772 BCX8\">adapted<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW94871772 BCX8\">\u00a0their approach. Midway through, they conducted journey-mapping sessions, which consisted of 60-to 90-minute conversations where vaccine<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW94871772 BCX8\">\u00a0recipients walked through their daily routines, the barriers they faced, and opportunities for integrating vaccination access. That process surfaced new needs and led to\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW94871772 BCX8\">additional<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW94871772 BCX8\">\u00a0projects and system improvements.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW94871772 BCX8\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"TextRun SCXW170701810 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW170701810 BCX8\">In the\u00a0<\/span><\/span><strong><span class=\"TextRun SCXW170701810 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW170701810 BCX8\">Black Genome Project<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span class=\"TextRun SCXW170701810 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW170701810 BCX8\">, his team incorporated community advisory boards, co-created educational materials with\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun AdvancedProofingIssueV2Themed SCXW170701810 BCX8\">local residents<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW170701810 BCX8\">, and invested time and effort into building one-on-one relationships with participants.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW170701810 BCX8\">One such example of building relationships: they brought in a professional yoga instructor to lead a set of yoga sessions on a Saturday for the research participants as a way to invest in these critical relationships.<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW170701810 BCX8\">\u00a0The project has now lasted five years, with many of the original participants continuing to show up and contribute.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW170701810 BCX8\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-23097 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cadca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/CIF-Community-Engagement4.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"936\" height=\"510\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cadca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/CIF-Community-Engagement4.png 936w, https:\/\/www.cadca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/CIF-Community-Engagement4-300x163.png 300w, https:\/\/www.cadca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/CIF-Community-Engagement4-768x418.png 768w, https:\/\/www.cadca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/CIF-Community-Engagement4-18x10.png 18w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 936px) 100vw, 936px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW253829335 BCX8\">Bringing the conversation back to coalition practice, Kristina focused on actionable steps that coalitions can take to improve engagement. First, she encouraged them to make sure everyone shares an understanding of\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW253829335 BCX8\">the competency<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW253829335 BCX8\">\u00a0itself: What does good engagement look like?
