Motivated by the desire to help her community in the Amazon rainforest of Eastern Peru, Lidia Carrasco traveled abroad for the first time in her life to attend CADCA\u2019s Mid-Year Training Institute. Sacrificing for five years to save enough in order to attend, Lidia left her home in Las Palmeras, Ucayali, Peru on July 13, 2019 bound for Grapevine, Texas.<\/p>\n
Lidia has been the president of her community coalition for almost a decade. She learned of CADCA\u2019s Mid-Year Training Institute through the NGO CRESER, CADCA\u2019s long-time coalition-development partner. \u201cI wanted to participate in the event to learn how other coalitions in the world were doing their work, and to learn more about their experiences and intervention strategies\u2026 and to improve the work of our coalition,\u201d said Lidia. The Las Palmeras Coalition was formed in 2009 and has since grown to 48 registered members including an active membership of 17 adults and 7 youth participants. \u201cWe have representatives from the National Police of Peru, the Amazon Hospital, the National Program Against Violence towards Women and Families, the Office of Social Development of the Regional Government, and other community leaders, health promoters, private businesses, and members of the Yarinacocha district municipality.<\/p>\n
The community of Las Palmeras has limited economic resources. \u201c[We] are not people who have a lot of money, and very few of us have a television or other appliances that would be considered common. We do not have traditional buildings and our houses do not have solid infrastructure\u2026 Despite our challenges, we are neighbors who always share what we have, neighbors who support each other,\u201d said Lidia.<\/p>\n
Young people in Las Palmeras struggle to finish basic education and rarely attend college. Unemployment and teen pregnancy are high. Lidia says these hardships cause the youth to consume alcohol and marijuana and steal. The substance misused most frequently is marijuana and there is easy access to the drug in various areas of the community. The town square has become a hot spot for consumption. In addition, the normalization of marijuana use in the community has not only contributed to an influx of users from other parts of the district in the area but has also caused an increase in crime and insecurity in the community that neighbors and police are reluctant to address.<\/p>\n
Las Palmeras Coalition focuses on promoting sports to prevent drug use, organizing sports activities in the town square aimed at young people. They also conduct literacy workshops with youth and hope to publish a book featuring the participants\u2019 work.<\/p>\n
CADCA was able to offer Lidia a partial scholarship to attend its Mid-Year Training Institute in Grapevine, Texas. Despite receiving financial aid to participate, Lidia needed to raise resources on her own to be able to attend the event. \u201cI had to start my efforts to obtain a visa in order to travel to the United States, traveling to Lima to apply at the embassy. Each of these steps involved paying expenses to the embassy and traveling to Lima, so I had to save money to cover these expenses, as well as my food and transportation expenses in Dallas,\u201d said Lidia. This was Lidia\u2019s first trip outside of her home country. \u201cEach day of the event was exciting. The most wonderful moment of this experience was to feel the joy, interest and congratulations of the participants in the sustainability workshop we conducted. When prevention professionals and members of other coalitions gave me their support and congratulated me with their words and hugs, I felt so happy that I even began to cry with happiness,\u201d Lidia recounted.<\/p>\n
At the Mid-Year Institute, Lidia shared about her coalition\u2019s experience with sustainability. Lidia\u2019s coalition, which lost funding from the U.S. Embassy in Peru, has been in existence for 10 years. After her presentation, several audience members spoke to Lidia about providing donations to the coalition. \u201cI get very emotional when coalitions from other countries tell me that they want to support us. I did not expect them to be so interested in the work we have been doing. Hearing that other people wish to support our work makes me feel that we are doing good work and that we can do more for our youth,\u201d said Lidia.<\/p>\n
While at the Mid-Year, Lidia learned of important strategies to strengthen membership, including celebrating members\u2019 birthdays, having fun together and getting to know one another. \u201cI also learned that when we work with young people, we can improve trust by talking to them with respect, asking for their opinion on our initiatives, and giving them responsibilities in the group,\u201d said Lidia.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs the president of my coalition and as a coalition member, this experience has given me even more resolve and enthusiasm to continue to work for our youth and for our community. I would also like to thank CADCA and CRESER for always supporting us on this path and for the encouragement they give us to move forward.\u201d<\/p>\n

Deseando Ayudar a su Comunidad, por Primera Vez en su Vida, la Sra. Lidia Carrasco Viaja Fuera de su Pa\u00eds Natal Para Asistir al Instituto de Capacitaci\u00f3n de Mediados de A\u00f1o de CADCA<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Motivada por el deseo de ayudar a su comunidad localizada en la selva Amaz\u00f3nica en el este del Per\u00fa, Lidia Carrasco viaj\u00f3 al extranjero por primera vez en su vida para asistir al Instituto de Capacitaci\u00f3n de Mediados de A\u00f1o de CADCA.<\/p>\n Luego de sacrificarse durante 5 a\u00f1os para poder ahorrar lo suficiente para poder asistir al evento, Lidia dejo su hogar en Las Palmeras Ucayali, Per\u00fa el 13 de julio de este a\u00f1o rumbo a Grapevine, Texas. Lidia ha sido la presidenta de su coalici\u00f3n comunitaria por casi una d\u00e9cada. La primera vez que ella oy\u00f3 sobre el Instituto de Capacitaci\u00f3n de Mediados de A\u00f1o de CADCA fue a trav\u00e9s de la ONG CRESER, socios de CADCA en el desarrollo de coaliciones comunitarias desde hace varios a\u00f1os. \u201cYo quer\u00eda participar en este evento para poder aprender c\u00f3mo otras coaliciones alrededor del mundo estaban haciendo su trabajo, y poder aprender m\u00e1s sobre sus experiencias y estrategias de intervenci\u00f3n … y para mejorar el trabajo de nuestra coalici\u00f3n,\u201d dijo Lidia. \u201cLa Coalici\u00f3n de Las Palmeras fue formada en el 2009 y desde entonces ha crecido hasta obtener 48 miembros registrados, incluyendo 17 adultos y 7 j\u00f3venes como miembros activos.\u201d Contamos con representaci\u00f3n de la Polic\u00eda Nacional del Per\u00fa, el Hospital Amazonas, el Programa Nacional contra la violencia hacia las mujeres y la familia, la Gesti\u00f3n del Desarrollo Social del Gobierno Regional, y otros l\u00edderes de la comunidad, promotores de salud, empresas privadas y miembros del municipio del distrito de Yarinacocha.<\/p>\n \u201cLa comunidad de Las Palmeras tiene recursos econ\u00f3micos limitados. [Nosotros] no somos personas que tenemos mucho dinero, y muy pocos de nosotros tenemos un televisor u otros electrodom\u00e9sticos que se considerar\u00edan comunes. No tenemos edificios tradicionales y nuestras casas no tienen una infraestructura s\u00f3lida … A pesar de nuestros desaf\u00edos, somos vecinos que siempre compartimos lo que tenemos, vecinos que se apoyan mutuamente,\u201d dijo Lidia.<\/p>\n Los j\u00f3venes en Las Palmeras luchan por terminar la educaci\u00f3n b\u00e1sica y rara vez asisten a la universidad y el desempleo y el embarazo de adolescente son altos. Lidia dice que estas dificultades hacen que los j\u00f3venes consuman alcohol, marihuana y se dediquen a robar para obtenerlas. La sustancia utilizada con mayor frecuencia es la marihuana que tiene f\u00e1cil acceso en varias \u00e1reas de la comunidad. Lamentablemente la plaza del pueblo se ha convertido en una zona de alto riesgo para este consumo y la normalizaci\u00f3n del consumo de marihuana en la comunidad no solo ha contribuido a la afluencia de usuarios de otras partes del distrito, sino que tambi\u00e9n ha causado un aumento en el crimen y la inseguridad en la comunidad que los vecinos y la polic\u00eda est\u00e1n renuentes a abordar. La Coalici\u00f3n de Las Palmeras se enfoca en promover deportes para prevenir el uso de drogas, organizando actividades deportivas en la plaza del pueblo dirigidas a los j\u00f3venes. Tambi\u00e9n realizan talleres literarios con los j\u00f3venes, de los cuales se esperan publicar un libro con el trabajo de los participantes.<\/p>\n CADCA pudo ofrecer a Lidia una beca parcial para asistir al Instituto de Capacitaci\u00f3n de Mediados de A\u00f1o en Grapevine, Texas. A pesar de recibir parte de la ayuda financiera para participar, Lidia necesit\u00f3 recaudar recursos por su cuenta para poder asistir al evento. \u201cTuve que comenzar mis esfuerzos para obtener una visa para viajar a los Estados Unidos y viajar a Lima para poder presentar la solicitud en la embajada. Para poder cubrir estos gastos extras de la embajada, viajar a Lima, mis gastos de comida y transporte en Dallas tuve que ahorrar dinero durante varios a\u00f1os,\u201d dijo Lidia. Este fue el primer viaje de Lidia fuera de su pa\u00eds de origen. “Cada d\u00eda del evento fue emocionante. El momento m\u00e1s maravilloso de esta experiencia fue sentir la alegr\u00eda, el inter\u00e9s y las felicitaciones de los participantes en el taller de sostenibilidad que dictamos. Cuando los profesionales de prevenci\u00f3n y miembros de otras coaliciones me brindaron su apoyo y me felicitaron con sus cordiales palabras y abrazos, me sent\u00ed tan feliz que incluso comenc\u00e9 a llorar de felicidad,\u201d relat\u00f3 Lidia.<\/p>\n En el Instituto de Capacitaci\u00f3n de Mediados de A\u00f1o, Lidia comparti\u00f3 la experiencia de su coalici\u00f3n en el \u00e1rea de sostenibilidad. La coalici\u00f3n de Lidia, que perdi\u00f3 la ayuda de fondos proveniente de la Embajada de los Estados Unidos en Per\u00fa, existe desde hace 10 a\u00f1os. Despu\u00e9s de su presentaci\u00f3n, varios miembros de la audiencia hablaron con Lidia acerca de proporcionar donaciones a su coalici\u00f3n. \u201cMe emocion\u00f3 mucho cuando las coaliciones de otros pa\u00edses me dijeron que quer\u00edan apoyarnos. No esperaba que estuvieran tan interesados \u200b\u200ben el trabajo que hemos estado haciendo. Escuchar que otras personas desean apoyar nuestro trabajo me hace sentir que estamos haciendo un buen trabajo y que podemos hacer m\u00e1s por nuestra juventud,\u201d dijo Lidia.<\/p>\n \nDurante el evento de Mediados de A\u00f1o, Lidia aprendi\u00f3 estrategias importantes para mejorar la participaci\u00f3n de los miembros de su coalici\u00f3n, como celebrar los cumplea\u00f1os de los miembros, divertirse juntos y conocerse m\u00e1s. “Tambi\u00e9n aprend\u00ed que cuando trabajamos con j\u00f3venes, podemos mejorar la confianza al hablarles con respeto, pedirles su opini\u00f3n sobre nuestras iniciativas y darles responsabilidades en el grupo,\u201d dijo Lidia.<\/p>\n \u201cComo presidenta de mi coalici\u00f3n y como miembro de la coalici\u00f3n, esta experiencia me ha dado a\u00fan m\u00e1s determinaci\u00f3n y entusiasmo para continuar trabajando para nuestra juventud y para nuestra comunidad.
