Enforcement of Underage Drinking Laws: A Local Law Enforcement Response Team Approach

10:45 AM
12:00 PM
Chesapeake J-L

Surveys consistently show that alcohol is the drug of choice among youth. Underage drinking laws are one of communities’ most important tools to reduce underage drinking and the better the enforcement, the better the results.

While many community coalitions work vigorously on issues relating to underage drinking, they often struggle with how to approach and involve law enforcement in these conversations. By utilizing a multi-jurisdictional team approach, these groups can create successful partnerships with local law enforcement to share limited resources in working toward a common goal.

This session will take you through the process of forming a local alcohol law enforcement response team including leadership, operations and training components. It will also address the successes and challenges of enforcing underage drinking laws in a community that involves a number of law enforcement agencies.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this session, participants will be able to:

1. Understand the value of a local multijurisdictional alcohol law enforcement response team

2. Develop effective approaches to engage law enforcement representatives in the formation of a team

3. Learn where to obtain and use data to build capacity, support and sustain the team initiative
