DFCs Improving Relationships with Police in Schools
Law enforcement is a key partner for DFCs. Police in schools can help DFCs to enhance and sustain their work. As school-law enforcement partnerships are expanding rapidly it is important for DFCs to understand the important ingredients of an effective school-based law enforcement program, so they can better engage this critical partner. Session includes a presentation about 5 critical ingredients to “doing school-based law enforcement right”: defining roles of the school resource officers; selecting the right officers; training them; guiding the effort by sound policy (MOU), and engaging actively with community partners. Then, in the context of the Strategic Prevention Framework, the presentation will describe how each ingredient affords an opportunity for DFCs to better engage with new or existing school-law enforcement partnerships. The session will also encourage audience input to expand insights from across the U.S.
At the end of this session, participants will be able to name the 5 critical ingredients of successful SBLE, describe how DFCs can relate to each of these ingredients above and explain how school-based law enforcement work with the DFCs is related to the SPF.
