Decoding The Disconnect Between Enforcement And Prevention

Monday, July 15th
10:30 AM - 12:00 PM
Room:
Grapevine B
Description:

Law enforcement and the judiciary system can be key component of most prevention programs and community efforts. However, in some instances approaching law enforcement can be a daunting task. At times the lack of engagement or the inability to speak the “same language” can cause frustration and lack of forward progress. There is a need for coalitions and prevention professionals to have a basic knowledge of the culture and structure of their law enforcement agencies and justice systems, especially those they wish to engage. In this session, Agent Anthony will discuss his involvement with community partners, coalitions, and prevention professionals as a law enforcement liaison. Agent Anthony’s experience working at municipal, county, and state law enforcement levels allows him to provide insight and suggestions on how coalitions can better engage law enforcement. Mahoney will be able to speak as to her experience as a prevention professional and her struggles and successes with law enforcement and the judiciary system. The session will discuss common themes and questions that arise when engaging law enforcement or the justice system. This session is geared towards prevention professionals and coalition members (either new to engaging law enforcement/judicial system or who are having difficulties getting these partners on board with their efforts). Lastly, this session will provide ideas on alternative approaches to engage these enforcement partners.
