Description

The opioid epidemic is a major public health crisis. Prevention is an important part of an “all hands on deck” multicomponent comprehensive approach to addressing the opioid crisis. In addition to opioids, there are other current and emerging drug trends that are of public health concern and require attention. This workshop will focus on current and emerging trends including, opioid misuse and its consequences; changing marijuana polices and trends in marijuana use; and, patterns of electronic cigarettes and other vaping product use among youth and young adults. The panel will present recent data on drug use patterns and trends and discuss prevention interventions and strategies to address current and emerging drug problems. The panel will discuss a media-based online approach to prevent vaping and e-cigarette use, provide examples of how coalitions are using evidence-based implementation systems for community prevention programming (Communities that Care and PROSPER) to address local drug use trends, and present on Federal agency efforts and resources to states and communities to address current drug trends and priorities.
