Competing with Snapchat: Seven Coalitions Collaborate on Digital Outreach to Teens
Teens often turn to their smart phones and tablets as their source for social communication, entertainment, and academic research. How can we adapt our prevention messages to meet them where they are at, and also compete with Snapchat and Instagram for their attention? Staff from seven neighboring prevention coalitions teamed up to develop a series of 20 public service announcements (PSAs) utilizing evidence-based messages, feedback from students, and over 10 no-cost/low-cost media channels—both digital and IRL (in real life). The “You Determine Your Future” PSA series includes the topics of marijuana, alcohol, vaping, and sleep. They highlight positive choices, benefits of healthy behavior, and factual information without the use of scare tactics. Attendees will see many of the PSAs, learn how the coalitions collaborated on development, and explore ways multiple community sectors can support the campaign.
At the end of this session, participants will be able to understand the process of collaborating with other organizations to develop a series of video public service announcements (PSAs) with evidence-based messaging and approaches, utilize multiple low-cost/no-cost media outlets often available through existing coalition members for a youth media campaign that is distributed both digitally and IRL (in real life) and supplement youth media campaign messages with materials and talking points for parents and teachers distributed via existing communication channels
