Changing the climate: Addressing the unique needs of LGBTQ Youth

Tuesday, February 4, 2020
1:45 PM
3:00 PM
Chesapeake 4-6

Description

Why are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) youth consistently marginalized? Why do they continue to have higher rates of substance use and misuse? This workshop will identify challenges LGBTQ youth face regarding bullying and harassment, family rejection, gender stereotypes and peer pressure. This workshop will focus on prevention strategies that you can take back to your community and enact tomorrow. We will focus on three prevention strategies that we developed in Los Angeles that can be adopted to local communities, including youth leadership development tactics, advocating for students in schools and educating youth workers to understand the diversity of gender and identities in the world today. We believe by working with LGBTQ youth in their early development, they will engage in a community where they can fully embrace their identity and find their voice.
