Behavioral Health Gaps: Filling in the Potholes on the Road to Community Wellness

Thursday, 02/07/2019
9:00 AM
10:15 AM
Chesapeake A-C

Description

When the Wilmington Coalition for a Healthy Community (WCHC) began looking at local conditions impacting substance use disorders among the rural area residents, the coalition found serious gaps or “potholes” in the landscape of community resources. Families reported having great difficulty finding help for mental health and substance use disorders and typically had to travel 20 miles, or sometimes much further, to find providers. Applying the Strategic Prevention Framework to a systems-related problem, the WCHC has, with the support of partners, increased behavioral health capacity in the community and developed strategies to foster continued collaboration around the behavioral health needs of area residents. Visit this session to learn how the coalition assesses community needs, engages partners and advocates, and sustains efforts to improve access to behavioral health resources.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this session, participants will be able to understand the importance and basic steps of assessing behavioral health service gaps, create an advocacy plan to address gaps, and market and sustain your efforts to reduce gaps.
