From All Walks of Life: Working Effectively with Youth from Diverse Backgrounds and Experiences

Tuesday, February 4, 2020
11:00 AM
12:15 PM
National Harbor 2-3

When coalitions involve a diverse array of young people in leadership positions, our capacity for activating change has dramatically strengthened. In this interactive and multi-modal workshop, we will explore issues of power, privilege, equity and trauma-informed communication as these relate to authentic youth engagement in community coalitions. By examining our own attitudes, beliefs and experiences, and combining these with current research on working with diverse and vulnerable populations, we become true leaders in bringing justice and empowerment to our work.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this session, participants will be able to:

1) Learn the important differences between equality, equity, justice and fairness; and how these apply to coalition work with young people.

2) Practice avoiding common pitfalls and mistakes in working with youth who have experienced individual, family or cultural oppression and trauma.

3) Gain skills to be a leader in promoting true diversity and inclusion in our coalition work with young people.
