ADVANCED: Taking Down Barriers to Physician Engagement: Make it Easy to do the Right Thing

Thursday, 02/07/2019
9:00 AM
10:15 AM
Chesapeake 7-9

Primary care physicians face many barriers to implementing best practices for treating patients with pain. We created a toolkit that could be used to remove those barriers at any clinic in our system and make doing the right thing the easiest choice. Physician engagement is key to prevent initial overprescribing as well as recognizing and taking steps to help the difficult chronic opioid user decrease or eliminate high dose opioids.

Step 1: Building the toolkit for chronic pain.

Step 2: Acute prescribing guidelines.

Step 3: Implementation.

Step 4: Finding the high-risk patients and changing prescribing pattern.

Step 5: Add alternative treatment for chronic pain and medical addiction therapy.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this session, participants will be able to identify tools to overcome barriers to adopting best practice prescribing, identify the value of ongoing support and education for success in the healthcare setting, and consider how to add alternative chronic pain therapies for chronic pain in a primary care clinic.
