Addressing Substance Use in Military Families

Uniformed service members and their families face unique challenges that must be considered to maximize the effectiveness of substance misuse prevention and treatment efforts for adults and military children and youth. In addition to highlighting national trends, this presentation will underscore transition points as particularly important periods for enhanced support and intervention. The importance of early intervention, the impact of problematic substance use on family systems, and addressing common comorbidities will also be discussed. Finally, military-centric challenges and risk factors will be highlighted along with cutting-edge resources, services and tools available to support service members and their families, prevent substance use disorders, and improve outcomes.
