Practical Theorist – a series of publications designed to summarize field research on key drug abuse issues, and to present it in a concise, practical format. In addition to the latest scientific research, Practical Theorists discuss ways that coalitions can use the data to mobilize communities and support the coalition’s mission. The Practical Theorists range in topic from the effects of drugs on the brain and principles of drug addiction treatment, to parenting, family intervention and inhalant abuse prevention.

  • Practical Theorist 8 - Understanding the Link Between Substance Abuse and HIV/AIDS

    An estimated 1 million people in the United States are living with HIV/AIDS. In this country, annual reported AIDS cases peaked in 1993 at approximately 80,000. While declining steadily between 1993 and 1998, since 2001 the incidence of new AIDS cases has increased slightly each year, with approximately 42,500 new cases reported in 2004.

  • Practical Theorist 7 - Inhalant Abuse Prevention 101: A Community Approach to Inhalent Prevention

    Developed in collaboration with the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), this Practical Theorist provides an overview of inhalant abuse and how it impacts the developing mind and body. It also describes potential warning signs, strategies that co alitions can use to prevent inhalant abuse and real-life examples of prevention efforts from two communities. This will serve as a valuable tool to help coalitions plan and implement effective interventions.

    Developed in collaboration with the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), Practical Theorist 6 provides an overview of the latest research in underage drinking and explains how coalitions can play a role in preventing underage drinking in their communities.

    Provides up-to-date, accurate information that will be useful to renew prevention and intervention efforts against marijuana.

    Surveillance systems help estimate the nature and extent of drug abusing behaviors in the United States. Learn how community coalitions, because of their access to a large number of community organizations and agencies and their focus on a specific geographical area, are in a unique position to establish or become involved in a surveillance network.
