Unless members of Congress hear from the field that substance use/abuse prevention works and is cost effective, it is not likely that they will include it in healthcare reform. Research from the National Institute on Drug Abuse and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism confirms that not only is substance use preventable, but it is cost effective.
Every dollar invested in substance use prevention achieves a savings of up to $7 in areas such as substance use disorder treatment and criminal justice system costs. Now is the time to let Congress hear this message from you, their constituents. Send a fax to the members of your congressional delegation, to tell them that substance use prevention must be included in healthcare reform.
