Issues: Cough Medicine Abuse
Drug type: Over the Counter

Data from the Partnership for a Drug-Free America indicate that one in 10 teens reports having abused OTC cough medicines to get high, and 28 percent know someone who has tried it.

Since 2003, the Consumer Healthcare Products Association (CHPA) and its members have been leading an effort to raise awareness about teen cough medicine abuse and have partnered with CADCA in this effort. In addition to the resources available at www.StopMedicineAbuse.org, CHPA has also encouraged parents to become engaged in the effort to help raise awareness on the dangers of teenage cough medicine abuse.

Are You Interested In Becoming a Voice on this Issue?
To support greater awareness among parents, CHPA is looking for parents and family members whose lives have been touched by teen cough medicine abuse to serve as media spokespersons. All spokespersons will receive the training and support they need to speak to reporters and other parents across the country about their story and the educational resources available for parents to learn more and talk to their teen about cough medicine abuse.

If you are interested in sharing your story and learning more about being a spokesperson, please contact Elizabeth Funderburk at EFunderburk@chpa-info.org. To learn more about CHPA’s efforts and educational resources visit www.StopMedicineAbuse.org.
