CADCA Accepting Applications for GOT OUTCOMES! Coalition of Excellence Awards
Each spring, CADCA offers coalitions the chance to receive national recognition for their contributions to community-level substance use and abuse outcomes. Sponsored by CADCA’s National Coalition Institute, the GOT OUTCOMES! Coalition of Excellence awards celebrate coalitions that engaged and involved their community in a comprehensive community assessment followed by an in-depth problem analysis process that identified unique and specific community conditions. Informed by the local data, these exemplary coalitions selected a comprehensive set of tailored strategies and interventions to target those conditions.
“This is about so much more than who has the biggest outcomes. This is an opportunity for coalitions to show off their skill in telling their coalition story which involves making a strong case for their coalition’s contributions to the outcomes they are reporting. This ability to communicate the impact of their work in a way that others can understand and appreciate is extremely important for a coalition’s sustainability” says Andrea de la Flor, CADCA’s Evaluation and Research Manager and manager of the GOT OUTCOMES! award program.
This year, a new category, “Coalition in Focus Award – Illicit or Other Drug” was created for coalitions that want to highlight success in preventing and reducing the use and abuse of a substance other than alcohol or tobacco. In addition, the two-phase application process has been streamlined to include easy-to-use templates for coalitions to insert the assessment and implementation information needed to complete their application.
“The application process quite unique because it incorporates personalized feedback and support to all applicants prior to submitting their final materials to CADCA” says de la Flor, and coalitions frequently report the experience as valuable. Peggy Dowd, of the Hunterdon County Safe Communities Coalition recalled, “The application process was one of the most beneficial documents we worked on all year. It forced us to pull our assessment data, strategies and outcomes together in one place. It showed us how much we had accomplished and where our holes were which helped put together a strong action plan for the coming year. I remember thinking, even if we don’t win, this has been a great exercise and or coalition is more organized and better prepared going forward."
Other benefits for applicants include increased capacity to write competitive grant proposals and the development of new partnerships. Also, a completed GOT OUTCOMES! application is quite useful for informing new coalition members about the history, work and outcomes of the coalition and supporting the development of presentations to key stakeholders.
This year’s award winners will receive national recognition as a model coalition at CADCA’s National Leadership Forum in February 2014 and free registration and travel to and from the event. They will also participate in a Forum workshop to showcase their successes and will be featured in a variety of CADCA communications throughout the year.
