  • Prevention Fellowship Available with CADCA’s National Coalition Institute

Are you a highly motivated individual looking to make a difference in the field of substance abuse prevention? If so, CADCA is currently accepting applications for a new Prevention Fellow. The Prevention Fellowship, funded by SAMHSA's Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP), launched in 2006 to build a workforce of highly competent prevention professionals. Fellows undertake projects that promote skills development and knowledge of state-of-the-art prevention practices needed for direct, hands-on service work.

  • New Legislation Helps Inhalant Abusers Seek Treatment

Advocates are hailing Rep. Charles Murphy (D-Massachusetts) and the passage of a bill which provides a treatment option to a growing number of Massachusetts families who suffer the destructive effects of inhalant abuse. Commonly referred to as "huffing," and most prevalent among 12-17-year olds, inhalant abuse is the purposeful inhalation of chemical vapors to achieve intoxication.

  • Police Challenged by Crashes Involving Prescription Drugs

Car crashes involving prescription drugs are often harder to detect and prosecute than those involving alcohol or illicit drugs, the New York Times reported recently. Drunk-driving crashes are declining, but law-enforcement officials say that more people are being charged with driving under the influence of prescription drugs. However, unlike with alcohol, there's no standard for intoxication for prescription painkillers, anti-anxiety medications, and other legal drugs that may or may not be used according to their prescription. Also, taking such drugs (alone or in combination with other substances or alcohol) has widely different effects on different people — all of which makes prosecuting such offenses more difficult.

  • A&E Selects Youth Coalition Leader Abbie Hansen as Recovery Project Youth Delegate

Abbie Hansen grew up in Salt Lake City, Utah, a place that one might consider being relatively drug-free because of the strong Mormon demographic, yet she spent most of her life around drug and alcohol abuse. Although Abbie never used drugs, her mother, Holly, served time for cocaine abuse and was ordered by the court to seek counseling. As part of Holly's four-year sobriety, she and Abbie continue their journey through recovery repairing their relationship, now considering each other best friends. With her mother's blessing, Abbie started a support group for youth and their parents two years ago to help other kids who are coping with a loved one's alcohol and other drug abuse.
