ONDCP Director Gil Kerlikowske Announces 2011 National Drug Control Strategy
ONDCP released today its 2011 National Drug Control Strategy. In it, substance abuse prevention is emphasized as “the most cost-effective, common-sense approach to promoting safe and healthy communities” and the “the Drug Free Communities program is recognized as a program that has “demonstrated effective, community-based prevention strategies by collaborating and leveraging important prevention work being done at the community level.”
In addition to expanding community-based substance abuse prevention, the Strategy also focuses on populations with unique challenges and needs, such as active duty military and veterans; women and their families; college and university students; and those in the criminal justice system. Two other signature initiatives are reducing prescription drug abuse and drugged driving.
