The Spouse & Guest Program is open to all spouses, family members, and guests accompanying registrants to the 2008 Mid-Year Training Institute. The spouse program is a social program and is not intended for individuals who wish to participate in the workshops.

Badges may be picked up with the sponsoring attendee's registration badge. Name badges must be worn for admission to all functions. A Spouse/Guest registration will allow access to the Welcome Reception, daily continental breakfasts in addition to the tour package(s) selected.

*A "guest" is a spouse, significant other, friend or an adult child (18 or older). A co-worker or an associate within the industry may not use the guest registration category.

JOSHUA TREE NATIONAL MONUMENT

Sunday, July 27 or Thursday, July 31 | 7:00am-12:00pm

The desert is immense and infinitely variable, yet delicately fragile. It is a land shaped by sudden torrents of rain and climatic extremes. Two deserts come together at the Joshua Tree National Monument. Few areas more vividly illustrate the contrast between high and low desert.

The monument encompasses some of the most interesting geologic displays found in California's deserts. Rugged mountains of twisted rock and exposed granite monoliths testify to the tremendous earth forces that shaped and formed the land.

Today's tour will include a loop through the park, with stops at the Hidden Valley Trail, where visitors may catch a glimpse of rock climbers enjoying the world famous climbing terrain in the Park, and at Ryan Campground, with its stories of a real Old West gun battle which took place there. Continuing upward to the breathtaking views afforded at Keys Point, guests will enter the higher Mojave Desert where giant granite monoliths dot the landscape, surrounded by the unique Joshua Tree and other abundant vegetation.

PALM SPRINGS ECLECTIC COLLECTION

Sunday, July 27 | 9:30am-1:30pm

Today guests enjoy a plethora of historic collections and unique designs, as they are whisked away from the hotel to the Palm Springs Art Museum and then enjoy a tour of the Palm Springs Air Museum.

Palm Springs Desert Art Museum provides a variety of visual and educational experiences including traveling exhibitions, an impressive Western American Art and William Holden's eclectic collection. From the Palm Springs Art Museum's permanent collection and loans from local collections, your guests experience will be a unique one.

En-route to our next stop, guests enjoy stories, fun-filled facts and trivia about Palm Springs' legends. Glamour and entertainment abound - celebrity homes surround, Old Palm Springs became the gathering place for Hollywood's beautiful people. Screen greats such as Barbara Stanwyck and Robert Taylor, Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball, Cary Grant, Elizabeth Taylor, Frank Sinatra, Bob Hope, Lana Turner, Bette Davis, Humphrey Bogart, and Spencer Tracy came to play, relax and hide away from the public eye. Rumor has it that Palm Springs is where a beautiful young starlet named "Norma Jean Baker" (better known as Marilyn Monroe) was discovered.

The day continues with a short transfer to the captivating Palm Springs Air Museum. World War II is one of the defining events of modern history. Its aftermath has touched the lives of every person alive and it will continue to do so for generations to come. US Air Power was the deciding factor that determined the outcome of the mammoth conflict. The Palm Springs Air Museum features 26 historic aircraft on display, from the B-17 Flying Fortress to the F4F Wildcat. Take a journey back in time and travel through our history, to touch the aircraft and the people who made that history.

LIVING DESERT

Monday, July 28 or Friday, August 1 | 7:30am-11:30am

The desert's many facets will be explored in this fascinating caravan journey at the Living Desert Wildlife and Botanical Park. Upon arrival you will enjoy the "Wildlife Wonders" show in the Living Desert's covered amphitheater. Sit back, relax and watch captivating desert creatures fly, crawl, and hop in a fun and informative program. Guests can then wander through breathtaking botanical gardens representing the deserts of the world. Howling wolves, sure-footed bighorn sheep and magnificent cats make for an unforgettable experience. A visit through the 26,000 square foot state-of-the-art Eagle Canyon exhibit includes encounters with golden eagles, mountain lions, foxes, javelina and more. A stop not to be missed would be at the Meerkat Cafe where you can enjoy a marvelous desert treat and specialty of the Coachella Valley . . . the date shake!

Village WaTuTu, modeled after a hypothetical-trading village in Northern Kenya, featuring native African animals, including a petting kraal with domesticated African animals. Other animals on exhibit include camels, spurred tortoises, striped hyenas, and a variety of African birds.

MOONLIT HIKE

Monday, July 28 | 6:00am-9:30pm

The desert's many facets will be explored in this fascinating caravan journey at the Desert Riders Park as the sky darkens and the desert night unfolds. A trained docent will escort guests through a star-filled night hike through special foothills making for an unforgettable experience.

An evening in the Coachella Valley means it's a great time to experience the natural beauty of the desert first hand on the guided hike. The docent will point out famous landmarks in the city below and throughout the surrounding mountains. A keen eye may glimpse one of the many nocturnal creatures coming out to feed. Brilliant stars and constellations stud the night sky.

PALM SPRINGS AERIAL TRAM WITH A CITY TOUR AND SHOPPING

Tuesday, July 29 or Friday, August 1 | 9:30am-1:30pm

Today you'll experience the variety, culture and glitz that is Palm Springs! First, it's off to the Palm Springs Aerial Tram. Imagine being whisked away from the desert floor 8,516 feet to the top of a magnificent mountain on the world's most spectacular aerial ride! The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway is the largest double reversible tramway in the world. Each of its cable cars is capable of carrying 65 to 80 passengers at one time. Once atop the peak of Mt. San Jacinto guests will find themselves in a 13,000 acre Wilderness State Park forest with a magnificent pine forest and views stretching miles to the Salton Sea.

Your return to the Valley Station will be your gateway to an insider's look at Palm Springs' lifestyles. Some highlights may include historical/social events, architectural wonders and geological attributes.

In conclusion to this fabulous day will be an opportunity to shop in downtown Palm Springs!

JEEPS ON THE SAN ANDREAS FAULT

Wednesday, July 30 | 6:30pm-10:00pm

Imagine riding through the open desert with the wind in your hair and a million stars overhead! Well tonight, your guests will have this opportunity to experience this exclusive 1,000-acre desert preserve, Metate Canyon Ranch, The location is a true geological canvas, described by one geologist as "The Most Tortured Landscape on Earth". You'll actually drive over and walk on the SAN ANDREAS FAULT - the largest and most dramatic earthquake zone in the country. Here, the Continental and Pacific plates are constantly moving against each other, thrusting the earth up into steep-walled canyons. The rains and oceans that have flooded our valley over millions of years have created endless mazes that document the passage of time with unerring accuracy.

To remember that this desert was once the ocean floor is something to contemplate. As you round the bend, the lights and warmth of the campfire welcome you. While silence envelopes the desert and breath-taking rock formations come alive with vibrant colors on the most surrealistic landscape on earth, ride through the moonlit canyons by jeep and relax while listening to desert campfire stories. Mini-Jeep Tours of the Canyons at Night - Let us take you on mini jeep eco-tours to explore the geologic wonders of the San Andreas Fault. Squeeze through narrow canyons carved by water, and thrust up by the San Andreas Fault.
Gold Panning-Strike it rich panning for gold! Our old west panning trough filled with river sand, water, and gold painted river pebble. A prospector will lead guests on a guided gold mine tour then show guests how the Old California Miners extracted gold from ore and teach prospective miners how to pan for gold like a pro.
Shoot'n Gallery-Guests will test their target shooting talents at this station they'll be given air rifles to shoot at the bull's eye. "Come on step right up to the ole shoot'n gallery"
Straw Cow Roper-This is what the real cowboys practiced on when they were still at the crawling age, see what talents your guests have as they try to rope a selection of straw bulls. "Get along little doggie!"
Lighted Horseshoe Pits & Desert Darts-Try your skill at hitting the bullseye by playing Cricket, or Round the Clock. Horseshoe pits finish off this station as guests try their hand at hitting the mark.
