New Resource Helps Families Navigate Addiction Treatment Options

A new resource, “Seeking Drug Abuse Treatment: Know What to Ask,” will help individuals and families struggling with addiction ask the right questions before choosing a drug treatment program. It was developed by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), part of the National Institutes of Health, and is available to the public free online or in hard copy through NIDA's DrugPubs service.

Sponsored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT), this public health campaign is designed to highlight the societal benefits of substance abuse treatment and to promote the message that recovery from substance abuse in all its forms is possible. To help community organizations plan a Recovery Month event or campaign, SAMHSA along with the Recovery Month planning partners have developed the Recovery Month Toolkit.

Although smoking rates among youth and adults had been declining for decades, national data shows that those declines are leveling off. Tobacco remains the leading cause of premature and preventable death in the country, causing 443,000 deaths each year and one-third of all cancer deaths. An estimated 4,000 youths try a cigarette for the first time each day, and 1,000 become "lifetime" smokers.
