Today, an estimated 1 million people in the United States are living with HIV/AIDS, with the incidence of new cases increasing each year since 2001. Drug abuse continues to be a major factor in the spread of the disease through both injection and non-injection drug use. In a recent interview, Dr. Jacques Normand, Director of the AIDS Research Program at the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), discussed the impact that drug abuse has on HIV/AIDS transmission, and what prevention strategies can be used to prevent the spread of the disease. The interview comes as NIDA prepares to host a conference entitled, "Drug Abuse and Risky Behaviors: The Evolving Dynamics of HIV/AIDS" on May 8-9.
