Federal law enforcement officials say that drug smugglers are turning to teens to smuggle marijuana and other narcotics across the border from Mexico and Canada through various United States ports of entry. For example, The Yuma (Ariz.) Sun reported that during a recent visit to an area high school, Border Patrol and Customs and Border Protection officers informally polled about 800 students and found that 10 percent had been approached by smugglers to carry across drugs on foot from Mexico.

Youth can often be more susceptible to the allure of drugs and other illicit substances than any other sector of the population so delaying or preventing that first use of drugs, alcohol, and tobacco products is vital. For coalitions, involving young people in coalition work, should, therefore, be of utmost importance. Intended for the Portuguese-speaking audience, the first podcast developed by CADCA’s International Programs team, “Importance of Youth Involvement in Coalitions,” focuses on the topic of youth engagement and touches on youth activities and organizational structure within a coalition.

While accounts of smuggling across the U.S.-Mexican border and organized cartels and street gangs may be no more than news headlines to some people, substance abuse and substance abuse-related violence remain a harsh reality for many communities along the southern border regions of the United States. To help provide community coalitions and health service providers with the tools they need to address these problems, the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy will partner with CADCA and the Mexican government to provide two collaborative, cross-border trainings to this region.
