The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is accepting applications for Fiscal Year 2008 Adult Criminal Justice Treatment grants. This program is designed to address gaps in substance abuse treatment services for adults involved with the criminal justice system. Grant funds will be used to expand or enhance the community’s ability to provide a comprehensive, integrated, and community-based response to a targeted, well-documented substance abuse treatment capacity problem. The program is also designed to improve the quality and intensity of services provided for the target population.

The October 1 Fiscal Year deadline has passed without any appropriations bills being signed into law. In an effort to ensure that the government has enough funds to continue operating, Congress passed, and the President signed, a Continuing Resolution (CR), which will be in effect until March 6, 2008.

The Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) announced $21 million in new Drug Free Communities (DFC) grants to 161 communities across the country and ten new DFC Mentoring grants. The awards are in addition to the $60 million in Continuation Grants released earlier this month to 565 Drug Free Communities coalitions and ten DFC Mentor Continuation coalitions. These grants provide community coalitions needed support as they work to prevent and reduce youth substance abuse.

The White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) this week awarded $60 million in Drug Free Communities (DFC) Continuation Grants to 565 DFC coalitions and five DFC Mentor Continuation coalitions. These grants will assist local community coalitions as they work to prevent and reduce youth substance use.

Today, the U.S. Department of Justice's (DOJ's) Office of Justice Programs announced more than $24 million in awards to enforce state and local underage drinking laws nationwide. The awards are made through the Enforcing Underage Drinking Laws (EUDL) program, which supports law enforcement, public education, and coalition building activities to address underage access to and consumption of alcohol.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has announced 25 grants totaling up to $190 million over five years to implement the Strategic Prevention Framework State Incentive Grants to advance community-based programs for substance abuse prevention.

The Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) and the Department of Health and Human Service's Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT) have announced the availability of funds under the FY 2009 Grants to Expand Substance Abuse Treatment Capacity for Juvenile Drug Courts. The grants will support the integration of the Reclaiming Futures model, which has been effective in helping youth break the cycle of drugs and crime, into the juvenile drug court system.

This program is designed to help states and U.S. territories reduce state-wide substance abuse rates.

The Second Chance Act of 2007, through the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP), U.S. Department of Justice, supports a comprehensive response to the increasing number of people who are released from prison, jail, and juvenile facilities each year and are returning to their communities. Reauthorized to provide funding in 2009, the Second Chance Act will help juvenile participants released from residential confinement to successfully transition back into society. Section 101 of the Act authorizes funds to state and local governments, territories, and federally recognized Indian tribes to implement demonstration projects that promote safe and successful reintegration of individuals who have been incarcerated into the community.
