Our Coalition conducted a prescription abuse survey to youth in Rogers County (2500 surveys completed) and will share the aggregate results with the community. Senator Sean Burrage will address the audience as well as Rogers County Sheriff, Scott Walton. A mother will tell her story of the loss of her son 6 months ago to a prescription drug overdose. We will also remind the audience that HCP built a permanent RX drop box to dispose of unwanted/unused medications in their home.

Description: The Drug Free Coalition of Hall County will be participating in National Medicine Abuse Awareness Month by hosting an interactive table at the Health and Wellness Expo on October 6th to raise awareness about prescription and over-the-counter drug abuse. We have also established a partnership with Northeast Georgia Medical Hospital, creating a special work group to address the problem of prescription drug abuse in our community. Another event we will be holding is a drug take-back program with a local pharmacy, scheduled for November 13th. We intend to use this event as a way to educate the community on the emerging issue of prescription and OTC drug abuse as well as proper disposal practices. Our goal is to establish a regular take-back program at the previously mentioned local pharmacy as well as other sites in the community.

Description: Prescription Drug Abuse Summit: a collaborative effort among UCARE, Upshur County FRN, Opportunity House, and PRC to further raise awareness of the prescription drug abuse and over-the-counter cough medicine abuse problems. This is just one step in a process of creating a safer, more aware community. The Summit is a Community Cafe with local catering to draw in a larger crowd. We will have speakers present on three areas of the problem: physician responsibilities, law enforcement, and patient responsibilities. Immediately following the presentation of each area, tables will be asked to brainstorm ways to prevent the abuse.

Our Coalition took a leadership role in Middlesex County, NJ, widely promoting it prior to the event and assisting on the day of the event. We had coalition volunteers at most of the 25 collection sites across the county, providing educational material for those coming in to dispose of medication.

Description: We are hosting a county wide prescription and over the counter drug take back and awareness day. We are partnering with our county sheriff to coordinate the event. In addition to the sheriff we are working with the law enforcement of 5 towns within our county. This will allow for a total of 6 take back sites throughout the county and provide every resident with access. Our take back sites will mostly be local schools and hospitals. In addition to the take back event, we will work with local media to raise awareness of the dangers of prescription drug and cough medicine abuse and encourage the community to dispose of unused medicine and be aware of the dangers if they are abused. We held a similar event last June and collected 10,000 pills or liquid medicine bottles.

Topics will include common drugs of abuse (alcohol, prescription drug abuse, otc cough medicine abuse), available resources, how to have a conversation about abuse, the law aspect (DUI). Description: Throughout the month of October we will be educating our county citizens on the dangers and signs of Rx and OTC abuse. Information will be sent home with students in grades K-6 and submitted to all three school districts' newsletters. PSAs will air on the radio. Press releases and op-ed pieces will be provided to both local newspapers. We have a monthly column in one of these newspapers; in October, it will focus on Rx & OTC abuse prevention and in November it will focus on our medicine (Rx & OTC) take-back event that will be held on Nov. 13 as part of the American Medicine Chest Challenge. We have already ordered and received brochures from stopmedicineabuse.org which, along with the brochures, medication advisory, and other materials we have developed ourselves, will be provided at the take-back event as well as at brochure distribution locations throughout the county including the schools, health clinics, pharmacies, vets, and senior centers. At the take-back event, we are partnering with Enterprise Police Department and their K9 Officer who will be present throughout the event.

Description: The Calvert Alliance Against Substance Abuse, Inc. is partnering with numerous organizations to sponsors a Prescription Drug Abuse Community Forum. This event will take place on October 20th from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sgt. Mike Bomgardner, Calvert County Sheriff's Office will provide a brief video presentation on Prescription Drug and OTC medicine abuse; a mother will describe her son's addiction to prescription medications; a local teenager currently serving time in our local Detention Center will tell her story as it relates to her addiction to prescription meds and heroin; representatives from the following agencies will provide the community with insight into what their offices are dealing with. They are: Calvert County State's Attorney; Department of Juvenile Services; Calvert Substance Abuse Services; Maryland State Police; Calvert County Sheriff's Office; Progressive Pharmacies; Calvert Memorial Hospital; and the Department of Social Services. At the conclusion of the presentation, those in attendance can ask questions from the panel members. Various community groups will host table displays to provide helpful information regarding services and programs for the youth in our county.
