PURPOSE AND SCOPE:
The VetCorps Development Leader will provide development support for the Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America’s (CADCA) VetCorps project. VISTA members are hosted by community coalitions throughout the United States and focus on enhancing prevention, treatment and outreach referral services to military personnel within their respective communities. The goal is to build the capacity of the community to support vets and military families (VMF). The VetCorps Development Leader will assist with creating and implementing a plan to generate funds and resources for the VetCorps project.
This is a full-time (32-40 hours/week) one year assignment as a member of the VetCorps project serving with CADCA. The VetCorps Development Leader’s service year will begin on or about November 1, 2011 and conclude on October 31, 2012. Office hours may vary depending on program needs. The VetCorps Development Leader should anticipate some evening and weekend hours.

CADCA Headquarters in Alexandria, Virginia
REPORTS TO:
The VetCorps Development Leader will report to the CADCA Vice President of Development. The Vice President of Development will evaluate performance in accordance with CADCA’s policies.
BENEFITS:
The full-time VetCorps Development Leader receives a monthly living allowance stipend (stipend is subject to federal withholding). Upon successful full-time completion of VetCorps service, an education award will be granted of up to the maximum $5,500 or equivalent to the maximum value of the Pell Grant for the award year in which the term of service is funded. Other benefits include student loan deferment, health insurance and child care payments (if applicable), eligibility for a non-competitive status for federal service, professional training, valuable networking opportunities, working with a dedicated team of VetCorps members and staff and making a real difference in communities throughout the United States.
DUTIES:
- Develop a written work plan—including implementation, communication and timelines—for
- generating funds and resources for the VetCorps Project
- Develop a fundraising and resource generation strategy
- Identify organizations that have veterans issues as their funding focus
- Establish relationships and strategic partnerships with stakeholders and potential funders at both local and national levels
- Increase renewal and appeal revenue from major donors
- Create a funding and contact database
- Track and report funding impact and allocation of funds
- Maintain communication with community coalitions to support local fundraising efforts
- Participate in VetCorps training, service projects and other activities
- Evaluate progress made in achieving the program’s development goals; create a performance improvement report that includes but is not limited to future potential funders, enhanced communication mechanisms and suggestions for improving the public appreciation campaign
- Develop presentations for use by the Vice President of Development with CADCA’s Board of Directors, Coalition Advisory Board, Strategic Partners and other relevant entities
SELECTION PROCESS:
Applicants must submit a written application using the my.americorps.gov application and member management system. CADCA staff will review the application placing special emphasis on skills and work experience. Appropriate applicants will be invited to interview with CADCA staff. Two reference checks and a complete criminal background investigation will be done prior to selection.
SKILLS AND ATTITUDES:
- Skilled at taking initiative, problem solving and working independently to create a development work plan
- Budgeting and analysis experience
- Proposal writing and donor development experience
- Basic interest in substance abuse prevention, treatment and outreach a plus but not required
- Exceptional interpersonal skills
- Excellent presentation, written and oral communication skills
- Understanding of the power and use of social marketing, media and networking
- Good strategic planning and thinking skills
- Commitment to the concept of national service and to making a difference at both local and national levels
- Ability to participate in trainings and have access to transportation to and from events and activities
- Ability to respond to organizational change productively and maintain a positive attitude
- Knowledge of military culture preferred
ORIENTATION AND TRAINING:
The VetCorps project, in partnership with the National Guard Bureau provides approximately seven days of training in program development, volunteer management, marketing, communication and leadership. Additional trainings will be conducted monthly for the duration of the service year and are also available through CADCA. CADCA will provide initial orientation to the VetCorps Development Leader.
Security Background Check: Applicants must consent to complete a criminal history check. The results of the National Sex Offender Registry check, State criminal history check and an FBI fingerprint check are contingent on the applicant’s ability to serve in the VetCorps project. Applicants must provide a complete set of readable fingerprints and sign a statement indicating whether you have ever been convicted of a crime. If previously convicted of a crime, a written statement must describe the crime and particulars of the conviction. Applicants may request a record check for the volunteer position sought. In addition, applicants have the right to obtain a copy of any background report and to challenge the accuracy and completeness of the information with the agency providing the information before final eligibility is determined.
Requirements:
- At least one year of successful experience as a VISTA member or a bachelor’s degree with three years’ work experience.
- At least 18 years of age, have a high school diploma or GED and be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
