Folksonomy

So you are probably reading this word and scratching your head, thinking that we are making up new words, and concepts to suit our needs.  Though you are close, this is in fact, a real word, and here is what it is all about.

In about 2004 when Web 2.0 and the “Social Web: started to move into full swing, people were looking for a way to categorize or “tag” items (blog posts, websites, photos, videos, etc.) with a category description and/or “keyword”.  The act of categorizing, labeling or “tagging” created a new, and social way of organizing, categorizing, and naming just about everything on the web.  

For the ease of the term “Folksonomy”, consider this to be the definition: Collaboratively managing “tags” or titles to create a method of content organization.
