Prom Promise Yields Safe Night For Wisconsin Students

In May, the School District of Beloit's Safe & Drug-Free Schools Program made a concerted effort to encourage students and parents to work together toward a safe prom night. The School District of Beloit, the Beloit Police Department, the Beloit Health Department, and the local newspaper, the Daily News, collaborated on packets for high schools juniors and seniors and parents. These packets included a letter signed by the police chief, tips for parents, facts about underage drinking, and a Prom Promise for recipients to sign. By signing the Prom Promise, students pledged that they would not drink before, during, or after the prom, and parents promised not to host at-home parties where alcohol was served. According to Fran Fruzen, the supervisor of the Safe & Drug-Free School Program for Beloit, the results was "a very positive prom night for all of our students at Beloit Memorial High School."

Clinica Sierra Vista

Lake Isabella, February 25, 2002: Two members of the Clinica Sierra Vista Substance Abuse Prevention Team recently attended a week long training on the latest trends with drug abuse, and it's relationship to gang affiliation. Attending the training at the San Diego Office of the Border Alliance Group were Katrina Haughton and Scott Allen.

During the extensive training, Haughton and Allen were able to examine up close and personal how to identify drugs of abuse, study the history and psychology of gangs and drug abuse, meet with incarcerated gang members, learn about gang identification and symbols, study safe and drug free schools, and learn how to mobilize communities against substance abuse. Seized drugs from Northern California were brought in for training purposes, including black tar heroin, methamphetamine, and a kilogram of cocaine. Haughton was selected from among the students in attendance to actually prepare heroin for injection just like an addict would. According to Haughton "it's amazing how precise the addicts have to be, and how little waste of the product there is. They even save small cotton balls to be used at a later time, when they run out of the drug."

The National Interagency Civil-Military Institute, and their Drug Demand Reduction Team conducted the training. Instructors and students from all across the nation were in attendance. According to Allen "we were proud to represent Kern County at the event, and look forward to using the knowledge we gained in our battle against substance abuse". In addition to the knowledge gained, Haughton and Allen made several contacts of subject area specialists who have agreed to come to Kern County and provide updates for others interested in preventing substance abuse. Clinica's substance abuse prevention program is funded under a grant from the Kern County Substance Abuse System of Care.

The Oregon Partnership launched its annual Red Ribbon Celebration, 2001 with a breakfast to engage community and business leaders on substance abuse prevention efforts. Over 200 local leaders attended! Speakers included OP President/CEO Judy Cushing (pictured), and Red Robin Vice President for Marketing, Neil Culbertson (pictured with OP Board and Staff members). Red Robin restaurants helped sponsor Red Ribbon week events and has become a community leader on the issue thanks to Oregon Partnership's efforts.

Oregon First Lady, Sharon Kitzhaber (pictured) and Judy Cushing traveled to Washington, DC in January to participate in a news conference for the Leadership to Keep Children Alcohol Free. The event garnered local and national attention and helped showcase the Leadership's efforts to build healthier kids and communities.

In February of 2002, Oregon Partnership is working with Governor Kitzhaber's office to educate Oregon legislators and the public on the benefits associated with an increase in the beer and wine tax. No word yet on whether or not the increase will pass, but OP and other community coalitions are helping to lead the way and ensure that prevention and treatment voices are heard!

The City Park Recovery Walk was held September 29 in New Orleans' City Park. The 5K was a celebration for those having the courage to embrace drug and alcohol treatment. The ultimate goal of the event was to increase overall awareness of the disease of alcohol and drug addiction as it affects millions of Americans.

The theme of the event was "We Recover Together: Family, Friends, and Community."

Approximately 100 people walked the 5K through City Park in September in support of National Recovery Month.
